Payson Arizona is the heart of
the "Rim Country", so named for the Mogollan Rim
which is the edge of Arizona's Colorado Plateau.
This impressive sight
(approximately 20 miles north of Payson at the
point shown above) stretches across a large
portion of the state but can be seen at it's most
beautiful north and east of Payson.
Nestled in ponderosa, pinyon, and juniper trees,
Payson is the population and
commerce center for Rim Country, an area which includes many small towns to the north, east, and south. This picture looks southeastward from the hill near the airport.
Shown is the man-made Green
Valley Park and Lakes. The lakes have quickly
become one of Payson's favorite spots for many residents,
who fish, walk or jog, sail or canoe, or simply watch the reflections in the water.
The park is the site of concerts in summer
months, occasional Art or Crafts shows, and is next to a museum which features historical exhibits, and the re-constructed Zane Grey Cabin. At approximately 5000 feet elevation, Payson enjoys four mild seasons with beautiful Fall foliage and several (usually light) snows a winter. The trees are green, the
air is clear, and the clouds seem close enough to
touch! Shown below is a thunderhead stretching out over the rim during the summer monsoon.
Even though we are "in the mountains", Payson is near to the Phoenix metropolitan area. The highway (Beeline Hwy or Hwy 87) from Payson to the Valley has been improved dramatically in recent years and has reduced the travel time until some people even live in the Payson area and commute daily to the Phoenix area for work!
The area also includes the
smaller and picturesque areas of Pine and
Strawberry (to the north) and Christopher Creek, Kohl's Ranch,
and Tonto Village (to the east) as well as
other small communities in the area.
